How to Care for a Made-to-Measure Suit
At the end of the evening, after setting down your keys and loosening your tie, a few small gestures help prepare your suit for its next outing. Empty the pockets, place the jacket on a hanger and look at the cloth in good light. A small mark noticed now is easier to bring to a specialist’s attention than one discovered before your next event.
A made-to-measure suit deserves the same consideration in its care as in its selection. It does not need elaborate treatment after every wear, but a routine suited to its cloth and construction. The first reference is the finished garment’s care label, rather than the name of its principal fibre.
Read the label before washing, steaming or cleaning
A jacket contains lining and construction elements as well as its outer cloth. The fact that some wool garments are washable does not make the same method suitable for your suit. Instructions for knitwear cannot automatically be transferred to a tailored jacket.
Check washing, professional cleaning, drying and ironing instructions separately. If the label specifies professional cleaning only, follow that requirement. If it is missing or unclear, seek appropriate advice before attempting treatment at home.
After wearing: air, brush and hang with care
For woven wool, airing and a pause between wears are useful habits. Remove surface dust gently with a soft clothes brush, working along the fabric. Do not scrub at a mark or apply the same pressure to every texture.
Choose a hanger that supports the shoulders without pushing the sleeves outwards. Give the trousers room rather than crowding them in. If the garment has become damp, let it dry naturally away from radiators and direct sunlight before returning it to the wardrobe.
More heat is not the answer to creases
Before using an iron or steamer, check what the label permits. Heat, pressure and prolonged contact can leave shine or marks. A small crease from wearing the suit does not call for vigorous pressing of the entire jacket.
The lapels and chest have a shape to preserve, rather than flatten. For persistent creases, or when you are unsure how the cloth will respond, use a specialist experienced in pressing tailored clothing. Avoid improvising a steam bath: humidity is not a universal solution for every construction.
A stain needs a gentle response
If a liquid spills, gently absorb the excess with a clean, white, lint-free cloth. Do not rub the area or test a mixture of household products on it. Keep the care label available and tell the specialist what was spilled and what you have already done.
Do not try to disguise a mark or smell by spraying fragrance onto the cloth. Treatment needs to suit the stain and garment; the surface appearance alone cannot reveal every risk involved.
Professional cleaning when it is needed
There is no cleaning frequency that suits every suit. Frequent wear, stains and persistent odours require a different assessment from an outfit worn occasionally. Choose a professional familiar with tailoring and fine fabrics, and show them all the components of the suit.
Discuss whether the jacket, trousers and waistcoat should be treated together to maintain a consistent appearance. Ask for any loose buttons, open seams or worn areas to be noted as well. Cleaning and repair address different problems.
Between seasons and when travelling
Before putting the suit away, check that every piece is clean and completely dry. Allow space for the shoulders and lapels; a garment cover should not squeeze the jacket. Inspect your wardrobe periodically and follow the instructions on moth-control products, avoiding unapproved contact with the cloth.
For travel, use an appropriate garment carrier and avoid pressure from heavy luggage. Unpack on arrival. A few minutes spent arranging the outfit before your appointment are more useful than a hurried correction just before leaving.
