Full canvas, half canvas or fused: how a made-to-measure suit is built
What lies inside a jacket changes the way you wear it. In front of the mirror you notice the shoulder line, the proportion of the lapels and the drape of the fabric. Beneath the outer cloth, a carefully chosen construction supports these shapes. For a made-to-measure suit, the conversation about full canvas, half canvas and fused is part of choosing the piece, alongside cut and fabric.
At Maison Consiglieri, all three constructions are available in the MEN offer, each with its own specifications. Your style consultant helps you compare them in relation to use, comfort, model and budget. The configuration is set for your suit.
The canvas: the structure that supports the shape
The canvas is a layer inside the jacket, used to support the chest and lapels. Its extent distinguishes full canvas from half canvas construction. The visible lining inside has another role: its appearance alone does not tell you what structure lies between the layers.
This distinction is useful when you look at a jacket without a full lining. An airier interior and a full canvas front construction can be separate choices. Equally, a full lining does not, on its own, identify the construction of the jacket.
Full canvas: support across the entire front
In full canvas construction, the canvas supports the entire front of the jacket. The shape of the chest and lapels is built in relation to this structure, to the fabric and to the proportions of the wearer. The aim is a natural drape and a balanced movement of the cloth.
The term describes the front construction. The level of handwork is discussed separately, and other areas of the jacket may use interlinings suited to the configuration. A client interested in full canvas can also ask for the finishes, hand operations and particularities of the chosen model to be specified.
Half canvas: a distinct configuration
Half canvas uses canvas in the upper part of the jacket front, to support the chest and lapels, together with fusible interlinings on the front panel. It is a version worth considering for the way the suit will be worn, the material selected and the budget of the order.
The choice is made by comparing the available configurations. A lightweight fabric, a particular shoulder line or a preference for a more structured look can guide the conversation in the showroom.
Fused: the entry-level version
Fused construction supports the jacket front with fusible interlinings. At Consiglieri, this is the entry-level option, with its own materials, details and specifications.
For the client, clarity about the configuration is what matters. The choice of fused, half canvas or full canvas should be discussed together with the fabric, cut, finishes and fitting process.
How to choose for your wardrobe
A business suit worn frequently, a groom's suit and a jacket for special evenings may answer different needs. Start with the occasions, the season and your comfort preferences. Then discuss the structure, the way the piece sits and the level of execution you want.
Consiglieri also offers a Handmade option, with over 90% of operations carried out by hand. This describes execution and has its own specifications; full canvas, Handmade and Bespoke remain distinct terms.
