Black Tie ensemble with a bow tie, photographed in black and white

Discover the Art of Elegance in Every Black Tie Suit

A made-to-measure tuxedo begins with the occasion and the way you want to wear it. The jacket’s proportions, the cloth and its relationship with the other pieces shape the character of the complete outfit.

The Romanian term smoking refers to a tuxedo, also known in British English as a dinner suit. Black tie is the dress code that gives them their context. For the rules, see the black-tie dress-code guide; this article focuses on choosing a garment of your own.

Begin with the occasion

Bring the invitation, time and venue into the conversation. A gala with a strict dress code, an evening wedding and a reception with more scope for interpretation may call for different choices. The decision goes beyond a colour that looks appealing in a photograph.

For a wedding, consider the outfit in relation to the whole event and your shared preferences. A daytime ceremony may be better served by the special-occasion selection. A tuxedo is not the automatic choice for every wedding.

Choose the proportions before the details

The shoulder line, jacket length and trouser volume influence how the ensemble looks and feels. At the fitting, view it from the front and side, then sit down and move your arms naturally.

A peak lapel draws a line towards the shoulders; a shawl collar creates a continuous, softer curve. Compare them with the width of your shoulders and the jacket’s opening. The lapel’s proportions matter more than a detail admired in isolation in a photograph.

A single-breasted front gives the shirt more space and emphasises the V-shaped opening. A double-breasted jacket brings a fuller presence. Look at both with your arms relaxed: the lapels should lie naturally and the fastening should hold a clean line without visible strain.

Fabric and evening light

A swatch deserves to be seen and touched before the decision. Consider its surface, fall and relationship with the lapel facing. Ask about the selected cloth’s behaviour in wear and its care requirements.

The choice should not rest on the mill’s name alone. The tailoring fabrics guide introduces Loro Piana, Zegna and the other houses in Maison Consiglieri’s selection. View the fabric from a conversational distance, too: a restrained finish can have more presence than a strong contrast.

A colour that belongs to the invitation

Black remains the classic reference for black tie. For a first tuxedo, it is a natural starting point if you hope to wear it to several formal evenings. A very dark midnight blue deserves to be seen in artificial light and beside the lapel facing, to understand the character of the complete garment.

The ivory dinner jacket has a place in summer and warm-climate evening dress, worn with black trousers. It is a different direction from an all-white suit. Velvet and more expressive colours also need an occasion that welcomes interpretation; the invitation remains your reference.

The shirt, trousers and accessories

Tuxedo trousers continue the jacket’s line; in their classic form, a side stripe follows the outer seam. At the fitting, look for a clean fall without fabric gathering above the shoe. The waist should remain comfortable when seated and the shirt should sit neatly beneath the jacket.

For the shirt, a plain bib front, a pleated front or a covered fastening creates a different accent. Choose the collar with the bow tie: its shape should frame it without crowding it. A glimpse of cuff and cufflinks provides a small, sufficient detail when the rest of the outfit is well proportioned.

A black bow tie, black evening shoes and a white pocket square offer a clear starting point. In the mirror, consider the balance between bow tie, lapel and face before adding further accents.

If you already have the shoes or accessories you want to wear, mention them when requesting the appointment. For a new ensemble, a made-to-measure shirt can be discussed as part of the same direction.

What to look for at the fitting

Begin at the collar: it should follow the back of the neck without an obvious gap. Then consider the shoulders, fastening and sleeve length. A close silhouette can still feel relaxed; pulling creases and restricted movement are not signs of a more elegant cut.

Sit down, take a few steps and lift your arms in an ordinary gesture. Bring the shoes you intend to wear so the trouser line can be considered in context. Small adjustments become meaningful when you see the complete outfit.

A tuxedo for the groom

The groom’s outfit should belong to the occasion and the person wearing it. Comfort during the ceremony, dinner and dancing deserves as much attention as the photographs.

Explore Maison Consiglieri groom’s suits and establish with your consultant whether the right direction is a tuxedo, a ceremony suit or a daytime ensemble. The groom’s guide supports this choice. An important occasion does not require detail for its own sake.

Preparing for the consultation and fitting

  • Share the event date and the exact dress-code wording.
  • Choose a few references that express your preferences, rather than a collection of unrelated details.
  • Mention pieces you already own and would like to include.
  • Discuss the estimated timing for your particular configuration, including fittings.
  • Assess the complete outfit in movement, as well as standing still.

A considered place in your wardrobe

A personal tuxedo can accompany more than one formal occasion. Consider how often, and in which settings, you expect to wear it. This perspective helps you choose a direction that feels right beyond the first event.
